What is SLC Urban?
SLC Urban is a way of life and a way of living. It is for everyone everywhere. It is about gardening, walking, bicycling, gallery strolls, neighborhoods, friends and food. Atomic Amy and the Spent Rods
We will finish off the day with Atomic Amy and the Spent Rods. Their music is sure to keep you going long after the festival is over and we are honored to have them join us again this year.
Belly Dancing by Thia on the Main Stage.
Another exciting addition to the 2010 lineup is Belly Dancing by Thia. Thia is an amazing performer and this is going to be a performance you should not miss!
Thia, belly dancer extra-ordinaire, four time winner of the prestigious 2007 Contributions and Dedication to the Utah Belly Dance Arts, “Grand Dancer of the Year 2006″, “Headliner Belly dancer of the Year 2005 and 2000″, has emerged as on of the brightest stars in Utah. She is the owner of the ‘Egyptian Dance” studio, “The Belly Dance Boutique”, “Touch of Magic” belly gram company and has performed in Greece, Germany and Turkey. Early in her life, Thia was exposed to Middle Eastern dance in an ethnic community in New York City. Her family’s attitude instilled in her an appreciation for the varied cultures of the many faces of our world. They immersed themselves in the different neighborhoods of New York enjoying the foods, entertainment, dancing, style of dress, attitudes and language. From this background emerged the fantasy that Thia has realized for herself. From the beginning, coupled with her background in and love of dance, emerged this present day icon of belly dance. Her extensive training as a jazz and ballet dancer prepared her for the world of dance Orientale. Once she realized that there were lessons offered for this exotic form of dancing, she pursued this art form with the passion of a true convert. During those days in New York City, she idolized the wonderful dancers dresses in silks with dazzling sequins and glitter, bangles coins and bells. The vision of a barefoot dancer sensuously moving to haunting Arabic Music, hips swaying, bellies fluttering and undulation was the impetus that drove her forward in her quest to be one of them. With an enthusiasm born of this illusion, Thia has worked hard developing her expertise as a performer of Middle Eastern dance.
The Joe Muscolino Band to Join Us Again for 2011!
We are proud and honored to have the Joe Muscalino Band joining us again in 2011. As always, this promises to be an amazing performance!
“There is energy created when a group of musicians play together and the energy is infectious. It’s a conversion between the players and the audience. It brings people to their feet and makes the music something to do. Without that connection, music is just something to listen to, or worse, just something in the background to hear.”
Wasatch Coaching Acadamy
The 9th and 9th Street Festival is proud to once again host the Wasatch Coaching Acadamy as our opening act! The Wasatch Coaching Academy not only gives students the opportunity to learn to play music, but they also give them the opportunity to perform before live audiences.
For many years, I have believed that young musicians in training need a place to get the coaching and experience needed to be effective combo and ensemble member… to explore, play and learn to love many kinds of music, and if they desire become prepared for a great musical experience in college, and as a future professional musician. The Wasatch Music Coaching Academy provides a complete opportunity for aspiring musicians to obtain the enjoyment and fulfillment they desire from their talents in music. With combo and ensemble coaching, superior music instruction, and a variety of programs, the student will develop the confidence and skills necessary to compete successfully in college music programs, create various levels of success in the music industry, or simply develop a sense of personal satisfaction with music. Through dedication, loyalty, and hard work on behalf of both the coaching team and the students, this vision becomes a reality.

2009 is shaping up to be an amazing Festival!
Festival planning is in full gear and I’ve spent much of the morning working to get things in place. The star of our festival will be our 99 red balloon event! See below! I’m very excited.
We’ve had so many great improvements this year it’s hard to know where to start. Adding Dan Hamilton and Andrew Stone to our group is making a big difference and they are much appreciated. This new website for example is Andrew’s work. Dan and Andrew are working hard at ensuring our best interaction yet with local businesses. I’m excited to see more of them get involved. Eric and Fritz have once again been phenomenal and I’m happy to have them back this year. We are once again the finish line for the Utah AIDS walk for life after a year’s hiatus. We’re also bringing in the Salt Lake City recycling program to manage our waste cans this year. Want to learn more about what to put in the green can vs the blue can? You can find out with us when you want to throw your festival trash away. Golds Cross Ambulance has also once again offered their services as our First Aid station. They have supported us for many years and they deserve a shout out for their continued and unheralded contribution. Thank you guys.
So what else? We’ll have a FIRE TRUCK! I love our neighborhood fire station. Come honk the horn and watch the ladder reach to the sky.
We’re putting together the best arts and crafts booths yet! I have more applications than ever ahead of the deadline. We may be full by the deadline this year and that will make our work so much easier.
And have you noticed? Our music line up is already set! It’s going to be a great year at the 9th & 9th Street Festival.
But help! There’s more! We need more volunteers! Please sign up. We’ll feed you, dress you (t-shirts), and give you a great way to contribute to our neighborhood.
See you there! – Heidi

The Nine Muses
While enjoying the 9th and 9th Street Festival at the Corner of 900 E. and 900 S. you are sure to notice a beautiful array of kinetic art. Call “The Nine Muses” it was installed in 2007. These works were the work of Seattle Artist, Troy Pillow. They are wonderful and constantly in motion.
